Dentures Q & A

Why would I need dentures?

Dentures are a fantastic tool for replacing teeth that are missing due to tooth decay, gum disease, or injury. These removable appliances allow you to chew, smile, and speak as you normally would, and no one is the wiser.

The prosthetic teeth are made from materials that are durable enough for full function, while also mimicking your natural teeth in both color and form. The acrylic base upon which these prosthetics sit is designed to match your gums and fit comfortably in your mouth.

What types of dentures are available?

There are two main types of dentures:

Full dentures

These dentures are designed to replace entire rows of teeth on both your upper and lower jaw. The upper dentures have an acrylic base that fits snugly over your gums and the roof of your mouth while the lower dentures are secured by a metal framework that lies beneath your tongue.

Partial dentures

If you aren’t missing all of your teeth, but several in a row, a partial denture is a great solution. These dentures are held together by a metal framework, which your dental expert anchors to your surrounding teeth.

What is the process of getting dentures?

If you decide that dentures are your best option, Dr. Workman first prepares your mouth by removing any damaged teeth and ensuring that your gums are healthy enough to support dentures.

During the preparation, Dr. Workman and her staff take impressions of your gums, which they send off to a lab for the custom manufacture of your dentures. In the meantime, your provider may provide you with immediate dentures while you wait so that you can still function normally.

Once your dentures are ready, you return to Braselton Smile Studio to have them fitted. During this visit, Dr. Workman goes over instructions for caring for your dentures, as well as tips to help you adjust to these new prosthetics. Dentures do take some time to get used to, so patience is key.
